I began taking piano lessons when I was about 7 years old. Music soon became an important part of my life. When I was invited to learn a band instrument in sixth grade, I chose flute. I continued playing flute in the band until high school, where students were being encouraged to learn a brass instrument. I switched to trombone, which opened up the opportunity to be a part of the marching band, pep band, concert band and stage band. After I completed school, I played with a town band and a group of friends, but when I moved to New Hampshire, my trombone went into the closet.
I recently acquired my grandfather’s violin, and arranged to take private online lessons with Gerry Raynor. It was Gerry who invited me to join A Measure for Nothing, but I felt the distance to monthly rehearsals was more than I could handle. When the pandemic forced the musicians to move to the Zoom platform, Gerry invited me to collaborate virtually. Now I love being part of the group! My trombone is out of its case for the first time in a decade or more. The group has also given me the incentive to stick with learning the violin.
