About the Performance

What to Expect

Our last concert, in 2023, had the theme, “Chords that Bind,” which reflects how the AMFN orchestra strove to remain intact while all sorts of institutions were being downsized or abolished. Our ensemble experimented with previously untried solutions to stay together. We adapted to monthly collaborations on Zoom. Many of us creatively tapped into learning the recording capabilities of our personal cell phones, tablets, and computers. The result was three Zoom concerts that were broadcast to hundreds of “living-room audiences” in England, Norway, Italy, Ukraine, Germany, Israel, Finland, Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Belize, and across the USA.

The 2023 performance was different from any we’ve done before. It was our first in-person live performance since 2019 and comes on the heels of only a dozen rehearsals and the loss of musicians who graduated, moved, or married. We are still a little rusty, but Music: the Chords that Bind has held us together. We hope you enjoyed our effort.

Our History

Humble Beginnings til' Present

Humble Beginnings til' Present

Humble Beginnings til' Present

"A Measure for Nothing" is a multi-generational group of individuals who appreciate music and see the value of group participation.  In the beginning, circa 2011, a small mismatched group of eight musicians took turns hosting practice sessions in their homes until a larger rehearsal space was secured at a local community college in 2017.

By 2020, the group had grown to 30+ local musicians.

This increase in performers created a more balanced instrumentation. Therefore, the group was able to tackle some ambitious musical selections including, Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King, Themes from La La Land, and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. Although our 2020 performance was scheduled for that May, by mid-March, the orchestra members felt it would be unwise to continue meeting in-person due to the pandemic. Sadly, the performance had to be canceled. We brainstormed several possibilities to sustain the orchestra's vigor and unity. Several musicians offered their video and online media expertise to create a Zoom performance for family and friends to safely enjoy at home. Thus, during COVID, AMFN produced two virtual concerts for all to enjoy.

Humble Beginnings til' Present

Our group is called “A Measure for Nothing”. The name sprang from a play on words. Often a conductor can be heard announcing to an orchestra, “I’ll give you a measure for nothing,” which means the conductor will count one complete measure with the baton before the music starts.”

Our group is called “A Measure for Nothing”. The name sprang from a play on words. Often a conductor can be heard announcing to an orchestra, “I’ll give you a measure for nothing,” which means the conductor will count one complete measure with the baton before the music starts.”

Music has measures, and people take “measures” to accomplish things.

“Nothing” can mean devoid of any substance, but it can also mean “without compensation”.

The group was formed by “taking measures” that would make it possible for family and friends to play music together “for nothing”. We do it purely for the joy of it and without pay, fame, rank, or glory.

We would like to express our appreciation to the family of Marcus Woodrow Barrett, a talented musician whose time on this earth was too short, for their generous donation of instruments in his name.
